Starting the Conversation: A Parent’s Guide to Teens and Online Games

    By james jamesOctober 21, 2026

If you are a parent, you have probably stood in a doorway watching your teenager tap a phone for an hour and wondered whether you should say something. Bans rarely work, silence leaves them alone with the risks, and arguments leave everyone tired. A calm conversation is the best tool you have. Whether the topic is in 101 or any other game that crops up in their chats, the principles below will help you begin.

    Start With Curiosity

Open with a real question. What do you like about this game? Who do you play with? What is the best part? Teenagers sense an interrogation instantly, but they respond to genuine interest. Let them explain and show you. You may discover that the game is more social and creative than you expected, or you may spot concerns you can raise gently.

    Be Clear About Money

Explain that any activity involving real money has strict rules. In most places, you must be an adult to take part in paid online gaming, and families should never allow minors to deposit. Make sure payment methods on shared devices are locked and require your approval. Teenagers are far more likely to follow a limit when they understand the reason behind it.

    Agree on Time Together

Set limits together rather than announcing them. Ask what seems fair on school days and weekends, and compare it with homework, sleep and exercise. Teens who help build the rules are more likely to keep them. Use the phone’s family tools to support the agreement, not to spy.

    Talk About Strangers

Many games include chat features that connect players with people they do not know. Teach teenagers never to share their full name, address, school, phone number or photos. Explain that a friendly stranger offering gifts or special links may not be who they appear to be. Make it easy for them to tell you about uncomfortable messages without fear of losing the game.

    Teach Scam Awareness

Young players are often targeted by fake giveaways and account-recovery tricks. Explain that nobody legitimate asks for passwords or one-time codes, and that free rewards requiring a login are usually traps. A few real examples, shown calmly, work better than a long lecture.

Watch the Signs, Not Just the Hours

Hours alone do not prove a problem. Look at the whole picture: grades, sleep, mood, friendships and interests. Warning signs include secrecy about spending, withdrawal from family, irritability when asked to stop and loss of interest in other activities. If several appear, talk calmly and consider speaking to a counsellor or doctor.

    Model the Behaviour You Want

Children notice what we do more than what we say. If you check your phone at dinner, a rule about phones at dinner will not land. Put your own devices away during meals and conversations, and talk openly about your own habits. Honesty builds trust.

    Create Alternatives

Offer real-world options that compete well with a screen: sports, music, outings, projects, time with friends. Do not force them, but make them available and enjoyable. Teenagers tend to drift toward whatever is easiest, so make the healthy options easy too.

    When Things Go Wrong

If your teenager has made a mistake, such as spending money or sharing information, respond with calm. Shouting teaches them to hide things next time. Fix the problem together, report fraud if needed and review the rules. A child who knows they can come to you is far safer than one who fears punishment.

What to Do If Spending Has Already Happened

If you discover that your teenager has spent money without permission, stay calm. Gather the facts, check receipts and contact the platform and bank if the payments were unauthorised. Some payments can be disputed, particularly for minors. Agree on consequences together, and focus on fixing the problem. When families discuss games like in 101 openly, these incidents become learning moments instead of battles.

    Supporting Healthy Friendships

Games are often a major part of a teenager’s social life. Rather than cutting access outright, help them balance online and offline friends. Encourage invitations home, group outings and shared hobbies. A teenager with a full social life is much less likely to depend on a single screen for connection.

Knowing When to Seek Professional Help

If gaming seems to be harming schoolwork, sleep, mood or relationships and your attempts to help do not work, speak with a doctor, school counsellor or mental health professional. Seeking support is not an admission of failure. It is a practical step, and early help often makes a big difference.

Teach Teens to Keep Their Own Records

Older teenagers can learn to track their own screen time and any spending, much like adults do. Show them how to read the weekly report on their phone and ask what surprises them. Taking responsibility for their numbers builds maturity, and they usually adjust their habits more willingly when they have found the data themselves.

    Pay Attention to Sleep Hours

Sleep is often the first casualty of heavy gaming, and teenagers need more of it than adults think. Agree a time when devices leave the bedroom and stick to it as a family. Better sleep improves mood, grades and patience, which in turn makes every other conversation easier. Small changes here often have a surprisingly large payoff.

    In Closing

You do not need to be a gaming expert to guide a teenager. Be curious, be clear about money, set limits together, talk about strangers and scams and keep the door open. Approach in 101 and every other game with that attitude, and your family will handle it with far less stress.
